For Immediate Release ~ April 29, 2009
The history of Indian gaming is not merely the story of casinos and bingo halls, but a history of tribes empowering themselves to take control of their destiny. It is the history of an economic, political, and cultural revolution that is still growing in significance.
Sovereign: An Oral History of Indian Gaming in America tells the story of gaming's genesis and growth through the words of the very people who made it all possible. Keeping with the Native American oral tradition, the text of the book is a compilation of interviews, conducted with both tribal and congressional leaders, that have been woven together to tell the story as one contiguous narrative. It contains behind the scenes accounts of stand-offs with armed federal agents, Supreme Court decisions, legislative battles, and stories of grit that have not previously been made available to the American public. The book was compiled and edited by Suzette Brewer with Cheryl Cadue.
Pre-release editions of Sovereign debuted at the National Indian Gaming Association’s 2009 Annual Meeting and Trade Show in Phoenix, Arizona, on April 14. The response was astounding. Rick Williams, President of the American Indian College Fund spoke at the debut reception: “There is a saying in our community that when you tell a story face to face, it is alive, but when you write it down it dies. The amazing thing about this book is the fact that the words are alive. They live on the page.” Jeff Franken, publisher of Ipanema Literatures reflected on his and co-founder Donald Blondin's experience with the book saying: “We knew all along that this would be a good story, but when we sat down to comb through the first interview transcripts and saw the passion and candor that people had shared, we knew that this would be a book for the ages.”
